Reduce It for Better

While the government and environmentalists are doing their part by becoming nature’s guardians, it is high time that we, as individuals, take up the issue and contribute, however small, to the cause of safeguarding our tiny planet. Discover the little things you can do every day that can make a difference to our environment. Reducing is an easy way to go green at home, at work, and school.

Home Tips
  • Start right at home if you wish to make a difference. Reduce household waste by learning how to reduce materials. Get started with these tips.
  • Create a compost pile with food scraps, yard trimmings, and other organic wastes. By adding compost to your soil, you increase water retention, decrease erosion, and prevent organic materials from going to landfills.
  • Ashes from your wood-burning fireplace should be saved instead of thrown away. A compost heap can be enriched with nutrients from wood ashes once they have cooled.
  • If you don’t need lights during the day, unplug them or turn them off. The result will be a reduction in energy consumption and a longer service life for your lights.
  • Make sure that your flashlights are powered by rechargeable batteries to prevent waste. Buy mercury-free disposable batteries if you plan to use them.
  • Buy reusable mops, sponges, and rags for cleaning chores.
Workplace Tips
  • Save your documents on your hard drive instead of printing them out.
  • Reduce your printer’s environmental impact. Set your printer to print double-sided pages. When possible, use a small font and the “fast draft” setting to conserve ink.
  • Make payments electronically whenever possible to reduce paper usage.
  • The best way to fasten papers is by using paperclips (instead of staples)
Travel Tips
  • No matter how well-intentioned travelers are, they create a lot of waste. No matter where you travel, you can minimize your environmental impact by reducing your waste, conserving resources, and minimizing your overall carbon footprint.
  • Don’t litter beaches or parks, and make sure to take everything back with you.
  • Ride together and share the road. There is less pollution when people use public transportation and carpool.

Remember a little step can make a large impact. Let’s begin now.
